President's Welcome Message - 2012

As we approach the start of the 2012 season I hope everyone has had an enjoyable festive period as we now look forward to getting back into all things football.  2011 was another good year for the club where we once again achieved record sign-on numbers with an incredible 900 players taking to the fields for Loganholme.  We had a strong year on the pitch with both junior and senior teams performing well and our promotion ambitions were fulfilled with our Premier Division 2 men’s team winning the premiership and gaining promotion to Division 1.

We have received a number of recent accolades which is always pleasing; and to be recognised externally highlights we are getting things right.  We were awarded the ‘Presidents Award’ at the Football Brisbane Gala Awards night, which is awarded to either an individual or a club, which displays the highest levels of achievement.  In addition, we also scooped the pool at the recent Logan City Sports Awards, winning the Logan City Sports Organisation of the Year and Sports Event of the Year (Carnivals) as well as being a finalist in the Team of the Year (Premier Men) and Coach of the Year (Nick Croyden).

I would like to thank our members for their patience during 2011 in relation to the significant disruptions to our season due to wet weather.  I am hopeful the new field renovation, which is almost fully complete, will address the significant drainage issues we have faced in the past and enable us to be more resilient in the wet weather.  I would like to personally thank Cr Darren Power and Logan City Council for their generous support by providing $200,000 in funding, which will significantly enhance the experience for our members.  Over the next few weeks you will also witness and number of small renovation projects, including repairs to the fencing on field 2 and a full enclosure of the main pitch.

Our sign-on days are fast approaching and more information is contained on this topic later in the newsletter.  We will be encouraging as many members as possible to use the ‘My Football Club’ self-registration process before attending our sign-on days.  Add to this the early start of the selection trials for BLJ and division 1 teams will ensure a busy next few weeks.

One of the fastest growing areas of our club is our girl’s and women’s program.  We will be launching a dedicated girl’s development program in 2012 for our female juniors as we look to build on the number of female players progressing to senior women’s football at our club.  We will also continue to work on our SSF development program and with a bit of luck we will have better weather so we can do even more work with our young champions of the future.

I would like to welcome the new members to our committee for 2012 (Raeleen Holman, Steve Milicivec and Chris Moreland) who all have children playing in the SSF side of the club.  It is great to see new faces on the committee who will be able to bring fresh ideas as well as providing a different perspective.  I would also like to welcome back the rest of the committee who have all been involved for many years.

2012 will see a partnership with Beenleigh FC in respect to our senior program, which will include a combined senior program and the use of Beenleigh’s facilities for training and matches.  A comprehensive explanation of this joint venture is posted on our website and I encourage all members to take the time to read this document.  This will provide enhanced experiences for our junior players by freeing up field space for games and training and should significantly reduced the number of teams having to train at Clarks Road.  However, there will still be a need to continue to use Clarks Road as a training facility in 2012, particularly between now and early April until our field reconstruction has been completed.

I would like to congratulate John Holman who was awarded Club Person of the Year and Neal Santinella for being inducted as a Life Member.  I am tremendously humbled to have also received the honour of membership.

I look forward to seeing all of our current members returning to our great club in 2012.

Go Lightning!
